farmers market, tel aviv port
this bustling market is a great place to find top quality fresh produce and it’s also a great place to find interesting ingredients, like carrots which are orange inside and purple on the outside (read about them here); a range of colourful tomatoes - deep reds, fuschias, black-green; and lots of scrumptious breads, tapenades, olives and olive oils, pickles, cheeses… even the vishnitz bakery from bnei brak front up, having figured out that the north telavivians may not like chareidim all that much and vice versa - but there’s nothing that cant be resolved over a vishnitzer challa. the bustle here involves dodging 4WD baby prams and lots of elbows - and the place fills up quickly, so there is no leisurely meandering amongst stalls unless you get here really really early. my one recommendation, other than getting here early, is to arrive looking for special stuff, and keep your everyday shopping to some of tel aviv’s local markets whose produce is just as good (it goes without saying, steer clear of the supermarkets!) - and more reasonably priced!
of course, go on an empty stomach - the vendors are generous with their tasters! and the apple stall vendors - and their apples - are the sweetest of the lot!
