Squashed peaches. Delicious! They are called pita peaches אפרסק פיטה here. Not sure what the universe is trying to tell me about pita this week, but my discoveries have been kinda cute.
I did a bit of research and found that I am not the only one enamoured by these little gems. Most of the articles that I read described these little things as cute, sweet, bemusing… They were first introduced to America from China, in the late 1800s. They are known by a number of names: Saturn peaches, doughnut peaches, paraguayos, flat peaches, belly-up peaches… They are deliciously sweet “with almond tones”, less fuzzy than your standard peach, fit snugly into your hand. I think that delightful is the perfect word to describe these - it’s hard to eat them without a giggle.
